I can kind of see why these macro things are so addictive. ksumnersmith took a picture that just cried out to be loled, and I was unable to resist. Here's the second, cleaner version:
And then, well, I just had to have this icon. And then it just started spiraling. Here's one of tnh:
The tnh one is particularly brilliant; disemvoweling the last half works so nicely.
I think this is the first time I've seen "macro" used to refer to this sort of thing. Here I thought it had to do with compile-time manipulation of data in programs? Or maybe it was something in close-up photography; I get so confused.
I believe the derivation is actually pretty close to the compiler/preprocessor usage. 'macros' were tags in a message board that would cause an image to be inserted. Then the named slipped to refer to the images themselves, then a particular sort of image...
see Wikipedia on Disemvowelling Teresa Nielsen Hayden, aka tnh on LJ, and also TNH, was instrumental in popularising the technique (she may have independently invented it during her online moderation), and is shown in the picture.

heh heh heh, alas
Much as I love the TNH one, the Van Gelder one is also clever and fun. The last word is what really does it for me.May 30 2007, 00:12:13 UTC 4 years ago
